Three PMI certifications, one place to start
PMP and CAPM share the same 40-hour class. The exam you take depends on your experience. PMI-CP is a separate construction track.
PMP
Enrolling- Best for
- People who lead projects now and want the credential employers ask for.
- Experience
- 36 months of project experience with a four-year degree, or 60 months without.
- Training
- Our 40-hour class covers PMI's 35-hour requirement.
- Exam
- 180 questions on people, process and business environment.
CAPM
Enrolling- Best for
- People starting out who don't have documented project experience yet.
- Experience
- None required. PMI asks for a secondary diploma and 23 hours of training.
- Training
- The same 40-hour class as PMP.
- Exam
- Knowledge questions with clear right answers, fewer scenarios than PMP.
PMI-CP
PMI credential- Best for
- Construction professionals: contractors, engineers, architects, planners, quantity surveyors.
- Experience
- 3 years of construction or built-environment project work in the last 10 years.
- Training
- 4 PMI foundational courses, taken in any order.
- Exam
- 120 questions in 230 minutes.

PMI credential
PMI Construction Professional (PMI-CP)
PMI-CP is PMI's credential for people who manage construction and built-environment projects. To apply, PMI asks for four foundational courses plus three years of construction or built-environment project experience in the last ten years.
The four foundational courses, which can be taken in any order:
- Construction Project CommunicationsCommunication planning, stakeholders, governance and information systems.
- Construction Scope and Change Order ManagementDefining scope and running the change-order process.
- Construction Interface ManagementCoordinating the connected parts of a project across its life.
- Construction Contract and Risk ManagementContract life cycle, delivery strategies, risk, claims and disputes.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for PMP training with Army Credentialing Assistance?
Yes. The PMP and CAPM are on the Army COOL credential list, so eligible soldiers can request Army Credentialing Assistance (CA) through ArmyIgnitED to cover tuition, materials and PMI's exam fee. Submit the request before the class date you want and tell us the date so we can provide the paperwork. Air Force and Navy COOL work the same way for airmen and sailors.
Is this PMP class only for veterans?
No. Classes mix transitioning service members, veterans, military spouses and civilian professionals who manage projects at work. The class is the same for everyone; what differs is how you pay for it. Veterans and service members usually use Army CA, COOL, VR&E or GI Bill® benefits; civilians often qualify for WIOA through their local workforce board.
I already have an MBA. Is the PMP still worth it?
They do different things. A degree helps you move up over time; the PMP shows an employer you can run projects now. Many of our students hold both. If you need work soon, the PMP is the faster step.
Should I get the PMP or a Scrum certification?
Scrum certifications are short courses on one agile method. The PMP covers predictive, agile and hybrid projects and requires documented experience, so it carries more weight across industries. If you have the time, start with the PMP.
Will you help me fill out the PMP application?
Yes. Your instructor walks the class through it, and we use a worksheet to turn your resume, JST or civilian work into PMI's project format. PMI audits a random share of applications, so we help you record dates and hours accurately.
Should I take the PMP or the CAPM?
It's the same class, so you can decide later. PMP needs 36 months of project experience with a four-year degree, or 60 months without. If you don't have that yet, take the CAPM. Join the next info session and we'll tell you which fits.
Does tuition include the exam fee?
Yes. The total above includes PMI's exam fee. Army Credentialing Assistance, Air Force and Navy COOL, WIOA, MyCAA / Spouse Works and GI Bill® benefits can cover the full amount for eligible students.
I have a set amount of workforce funding. Can I use it for more than one certification?
Often, yes. Stacking certifications can use more of your award. Talk to us before you submit your training request so we can plan the order.
Do I have to renew the PMP?
Yes. PMP holders earn 60 professional development units every three years. Work on projects, PMI chapter events and further training all count.
When is the next class?
The next weekend course starts November 7, 2026. After that, January 23, 2027, and an in-person week near Fort Bliss on May 17–21, 2027. See the full schedule above.
